happy birthday to me!
Jan. 17th, 2006 05:39 pmhere's part of the lost post, found again.
I had a mostly awesome weekend. I hadn't particularly expected to, I couldn't really imagine being anything other than anxious with that many people in my house, but I'd figured a weekend's worth of anxiety a pretty low price to pay for Light getting to see his friends and one of them seems to be in that nebulous stage between Light's friend and my friend (our friend?) and I was actively excited about seeing him. (Which makes it sound like we can't both have him as a friend, but it's not intended as an either/or statement.) And, well, cooking for people is fun, as is showing of my house and my cats. (I'm weirdly aware of using my to refer to the house today, and I have no idea what's bringing that up, but don't particularly feel like trying to sort it out, I'm just going to make a note of it and come back to it.)
But I went to see Tulip Friday night and after initial awkwardness, because, well, I'm nothing if not socially awkward, we settled down to play with her mother's old sewing machine, and it very much inspired a strong urge in me to attempt to either relearn or learn how to sew. I managed a costume shop in college, and did a lot of piece work, and certainly picked up a few things along the way, but really only ended up making a handful of pieces of clothing start to finish and only did so with access to a pretty spectacular (and professional-grade) range of tools, so post-college, the idea of trying to make anything daunted pretty severely. Red bought me a second hand sewing machine, and I've used it to do some mending, but now it just languishes in the basement. I'm hoping to haul it out in the next couple days, and see if I can figure out a not-awful way to set it up and poke around to see what it's capable of, if anything, and then after that try and figure out what I want to do with it, or what I want to try and teach myself.
Upon examination, it seems like a lot of the things I want to learn are specific skills. I'd love a cooking class, or a sewing class, or really anything that taught me how to do something with my hands that isn't too fussy or specific (like scrapbooking or beading or spongepainting), and after that, I think I'm most curious about Spanish (or german or refreshing latin or greek) or math, and then after that, something physical, like dancing or a martial art. I'm not sure if I'll take action on this newly determined hierarchy, but I think it might be a good thing to know about myself.
Back to the weekend narration, though. Went home, and the people intended to arrive that night still hadn't arrived, so there was some Guitar Hero. (I get strangely put out when Light beats me, and am not sure why this game in particular triggers my rare-but-fierce competitiveness. At least, I think it's rare) and then guests arrived and conversation late into the night. The next morning was French toast, more arrivals, then they all began Twilight Imperium, and I puttered, did dishes, played puzzle pirates and katamari, then left the house for a couple hours to visit Joann's with tulip and Algonquin, then back again to make a double batch of sweetpotatoblackbean burritos and a single batch of chili. The time was actually pretty excellent, the food game out of the oven only like fifteen minutes after they'd finished packing up (I think the game lasted eight or nine hours) then there was lounging, and one person left, then jason took the rest out for ice cream, and the aforementioned potentially shared friend stayed home with me and made me a ginger birthday cake with bark whipped cream. (I'm still struggling for a usename. There are an endless number of variations on words touching on the concepts of wellread/wicked smart, wellmannered and attractive, but they all seem kind of dumb and obvious at the moment, so, for the moment I'll call him B.)
I fell asleep on B. Which was startlingly comfortable. I think I may have even been flirting with him, though apparently I've forgotten exactly what flirting is, so I might not have been.
and now, thai food for my birthday. light got me awesome loot, and my mom sent me a culinary torch, which i plan on utilizing at my first (appropriate) opportunity. i got an awesome number of emailed wellwishes from a bunch of people, all of which made me very happy, and made me feel very well taken care of. thank you.

Date: 2006-01-18 07:03 am (UTC)I'm sorry I did not call you for your birthday. I wanted to, but I did not get home from my workday until 10:45, and I figured you might be asleep. But is there a day that Grinninfoole and I could take you out somewhere to celebrate?
I'm glad that I had some small part in inspiring what seems like the recent opening of a door to another part of your soul. Depending on what you decide you want to do, I would be up for taking a sewing class with you, and I know that GF would be into taking a Spanish class with you.
More specifically speaking, when shall we get together next? Oh, and when can I lure you to Shelburne Falls?
Finally, a burning question: Did you find out what that widgety little thing you found in the back of my car is called? :)

Happy (belated) birthday! Glad that your weekend was spiffy... and I think you should totally take up something hand-crafty, and take classes and the whole thing.
PS: A cooking class? You're a wonderful cook... see, all you needed was happy cookbooks. :)
