It's been a while since I've posted about cooking. I think I failed to make note of some, but this is most of the past couple months of brandy-new recipes.
Abject failures.
16. Vindaloo Vegetables from Fresh from the Vegetarian Slow Cooker. Mushy, blandy and funny smelling.
17. Pesto-Potato Soup with Toasted Pine Nuts from Fresh from the Vegetarian Slow Cooker. Also bland.
18. Roasted Tofu with Lime Sauce from 1001 Low Fat Vegetarian Recipes. There are better things to do to tofu than this.
In the end, I think I like the idea of the slowcooker better than the reality. Or maybe I just don't really like this cookbook.
Middle ground
19. Bulgarian Pepper Casserole from Moosewood Cookbook. Brown rice, dill, cottage cheese, peppers and stuff. Interesting, but not awesome.
20. French Onion Pizza thing from 1001 Low Fat Vegetarian Recipes. We failed entirely to make pizza crust, went out bought a boboli shell and put the topping on that. The topping was awesome. It's hard for a recipe involving that many caramelized onions not to be yummy.
21. Cinnamon Rolls from The Mixer Bible. I affectionately referred to these as my cinnamon catastrophe. They were awesome and yummy and sticky, but calling them Rolls was a little generous.
22. Pastistio from 1001 Low Fat Vegetarian Recipes. Bland, but kind of yummy. Really, since the shepherd's pie recipe I found online was so good, I'll try just about any recipe that tells me to combine fake meat and cinnamon at least once.
Awesome
23. Irish Soda Bread from The Mixer Bible. It might not seem like rocket science, but the fact that I can now make soda bread whenever I want instead of eagerly awaiting the time in March when it becomes available from the grocery store is thrilling.
24. Serbian Leek Cakes from 1001 Low Fat Vegetarian Recipes. Funny leek pancakes with sausage in them. One of those blessed dishes that tastes good the first time and then even better as leftovers.
25. Sushi Rice Salad from Lowfat Moosewood. Brown rice, carrots, cucumber and red pepper all mixed together with a sauce made from sugar, vinegar, ginger (and other stuff). I have a feeling this will be a staple when it gets too warm to cook.
26. Pan Fried Tofu with Asian Caramel Sauce from Gourmet Magazine. Shameful confession, this is the first time I've ever made any sort of caramel. (unless using a culinary torch on bananas rolled in sugar counts). The tofu itself was uninspiring, but the sauce wsa completely awesome.
27 orange honey bread from The Encyclopedia of Baking. I decided to try something new for the co-op's plant and bake sale. Though I only had a sliver of it, this seemed pretty yummy and it made the house smell awesome. I think I've forgotten how dense quick breads are supposed to be.
28. rhubarb chutney from the whole foods website. I undercooked it a little bit, I think, but on top of ice cream it is a nigh-holy experience.
