2017 reading (post 3 of X)
Jan. 8th, 2018 06:14 pmNow we're reduced to just listing books because I can't think of clever coherent themes. (88-102)
Dark Companion by Marta Acosta - did not live up to the cover blurb of Jane Eyre meets Twilight.
The Heart Goes Last by Margaret Atwood - I still love the writer, but this didn't especially move me.
13 Ways of Looking at a Fat Girl by Mona Awad - veered wildly between relatable and awful.
Borderline and Phantom Pains by Mishell Baker - holy shit you guys go read these. Elves and BPD and weird musings about creativity.
A School for Unusual Girls by Kathleen Baldwin - seems like the sort of thing I should be a sucker for and I wasn't (but I'll still read the next one)
Chime by Franny Billingsley - nope. I wanted to slap the protagonist like six pages in.
Doll Bones by Holly Black - creepy, more middle school than YA
Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake - I saw the twist pretty quickly (go me!) but I adore the author and this is an interesting world she's building.
The Immortals by Jordanna Max Brodsky - greek gods living in modern times for Reasons. I wanted to love this so badly and did not. Boo on the stilted romance to boot.
Walk on Earth a Stranger by Rae Carson - This was listed in one of the QUILTBAG lists, but it's a alt-history gold rush wagon caravan with a girl who dresses as a boy for safety.
Invisible Library by Genevieve Cogman - another one that should have been a hit with me, magical libraries usually are and I loved the conceit of precise language as magic. I wasn't snagged though, it started with an interesting scene and just kept getting less interesting.
Pointe by Brandy Colbert - ballet, eating disorder, child abduction.
Little Beach Street Bakery by Jennifer Colgan - Romance novel with a bakery involved. And a beekeeper.
End of a Sentence by Maria Dahvana Headley - I knew it was horrory, but I somehow thought it was about grammar and not prison. Intriguing take on accidentally inheriting a ghost.
