July reading:

It doesn't feel like I read all that much.    Between Readercon and getting in a pitched battle with a Joe Hill book I ended up really, really disliking, my page count wasn't that.

At Feste's prompting, I read six trade paperbacks of Wet Moon.   I'm sitting with how I feel about them for a bit, but there are parts that make me ache with college memories.   At kickstarter's prompting, I read Tripping Over You, the blue book which is an adorable coming-of-age romance.  Because I am a reasonable person of good taste, I read the next tp of Saga.

Bookwise, I continue to try to weed my selection and in that spirit, finally read The Big U by Neal Stephenson cover to cover.  It's like twelve pages of brilliance buried under another couple hundred of whatthefuck.   This book has a unfleshedout black character as the POV narrator.  There's rape and violence and unrealistic female characters, and really bizarre treatments of queerness.    (I think somewhere in there someone became a lesbian because her female friend shot the man who was trying to rape her.)   This is not going to be a keeper.

The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman
.   I got my signed copy from PSB, and found it kind of disappointing.   Not horrible, just this sense of really?  that's how you're leaving it?  The character learns nothing?

Demon's Convenant by Sarah Rees Brennan.  Adorable.

NOS4A2 by Joe Hill.   Bleck.   692 pages, for a couple interesting concepts, and a lot of creepiness/shock horror.  Killer children, people getting raped in basements, a magic car.  Etc.

Travel Light by Naomi Mitchison.   Part of being a Small Beer Press fangirl ends me up with odd books, and this is one of their peapod classics.  This was really, really amazing in a sort of fairy tale/children's book kind of way, sweet and sad.
