Dec. 18th, 2011 10:22 amI'm trying to figure how to track (in Librarything) books that I have walked away from and have no intention of returning to. This is a more active category than just getting a book from a library and having to return it before finishing it. This is beginning a book and finding it so egregiously badly written, or finding it contains one of a handful of things about which I simply will not read.
But I want to know that I've started this book, and not finished it on purpose. And dull isn't really a firing offense. I expect someday to be seized by a passion to read Margaret Drabble, or maybe even beat poets or a book written entirely in a dialect. And my initial label was going to be "defeated me" but that's not exactly what's happening.
It's not that these books have defeated me. I'm not actually in a contest with them. I'm not winning if I read something that makes me miserable, I'm not losing if I establish book-boundaries.
Maybe I'll call the set of books PTFD. Put the fuck down.
And lo, I have. I have tags for PTFD-breast cancer, PTFD-rape and PTFD-badly edited
