2017 reading (post 2 of X)
Jan. 3rd, 2018 04:03 pm so, thinking that i was going to manage to round up a year of reading in three entries was a bit over optimistic of me *coughhubriscough* I also intend to do at least one top ten of the year at the end of this, but let me know if I mention anything you'd like an actual review on.
My ears prick up for pretty much any shakespeare retelling so I read three of the Hogarth Shakespeare series this year. Hagseed, Margaret Atwood's retelling of Tempest, Vinegar Girl, Anne Tyler's retelling of Taming of the Shrew and The Gap of Time, Jeanette Winterson's telling of Winter's Tale. I liked Winterson's best, though all of them had wonderful moments. (51-53)
I also read As I descended by Robin Talley, which is a retelling of MacBeth in a modern private school with lesbians and what felt like extra ghosts and one of my favorites of the year The Only Thing Worse Than You Is Me by Lily Anderson, a retelling of Much Ado, with nerd teenagers at a magnet school who quote, among other things, Buffy episodes at each other. (54-55)

Sidestepping a bit, since (1) our library sometimes had authors from this list but not the specifically recommended books (2) there was a lot of queer YA not on this list and (3) I read some queer fiction (and one auto-bio) that wasn't explicitly YA (4) at least one trans* author and
