Jan. 31st, 2013

There's a thing, where people post five things they're grateful for each day of February. I tried this last year, and promptly threw it out the window my princess-cat died. And now, February comes back around, and there's another cat dead.

I'm not sure the month can bear up under the weight of all this, but I've fired January, so February will be a month of gratitudes, a month of resolutions and reviews. Gratitude seems dangerous to me. But I think I need this, and so I'll try again. Five things a day, no explicit people-naming, no passive aggressive bullshit, and as little sarcasm as I can manage.

I made these things for the first time in January: Slow-cooker Chili, Smoky Corn Risotto, stock, a soup called Onion Sonata, vanilla rice pudding and cinnamon sugar rice pudding, s'mores brownies, oatmeal cookie pancakes, forty clove chickpeas and broccoli, baked bean soup, and my favorite oatmeal cake with butterscotch frosting.

I read these books for the first time in January: Cold Days by Jim Butcher which pissed me off like all the other Butcher novels have lately, but I still read it. Railsea by China Mieville which hit all my buttons with Moby Dick on trains. Old Man's War by John Scalzi, because I read his blog and Light got the humble bundle pack. Second Line by Poppy Z Brite, which came with my Lady Churchill's Rosebud Wristlet subscription. Graceling and Fire by Kristin Cashore, because I was promised the queer characters. Fire Logic by Laurie Marks, because everyone ever recommended it (and rightly so) . Astray by Emma Donoghue, because it's been long enough since Room. And I think my favorite, for all that it was occasionally muddled by too much worldbuilding, When the Sea is Rising Red by Cat Hellisen.

These things happened in January. My baby girl, my Funnyface spent a lot of time in cat-ICU, and I had to choose to put her down. My sister-in-law gave birth 9 weeks early. My mother-in-law had a mastectomy. I didn't go Arisia. I had my yearly check-in with my oncologist. I took a gun safety course. I turned 37. I got the cat-memorial tattoo I'd been thinking about since Princess died. Light built me an awesome pantry.

I saw these things in January: The American Textile History Museum, the movie Django, the mastodon & mammoth exhibit at the MoS. My incredibly teeny new nephew. A lot of bad TV.

It was a month. It happened. It's done happening now.
